If left untreated venous insufficiency can lead to blood pooling in the lower legs. This stagnant blood can cause blood clots to develop in the veins of the legs. Blood clots can break off and travel to the lungs causing a pulmonary embolism that can be fatal. That's why it's so important that venous insufficiency be discovered and treated as quickly as possible. At Milford Vascular Institute, our vascular specialists use the most advanced ultrasound technology to diagnose venous insufficiency. To treat venous insufficiency our vascular specialists use minimally-invasive surgery methods such as radiofrequency ablation, VenaSeal™ vein closure, Varithena® microfoam treatment, and laser vein ablation (EVLT), which are all performed on an outpatient basis right in our office. It could be PAD. PAD (artery blockage) causes leg pain. The most evident symptom of PAD is claudication, pain in the legs while walking that goes away when you stop and rest. Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a condition where the leg arteries get blocked by plaque build-up, restricting blood circulation and putting a person at risk of leg amputation. So, if you are experiencing leg pain or leg cramps while walking, it is recommended to have a vascular consultation and ultrasound as soon as possible to help determine if your symptoms may be due to a blockage in one of your leg arteries (PAD). At Milford Vascular Institute our vascular specialists use the most advanced ultrasound technology to accurately diagnose PAD. To treat PAD and restore healthy blood flow through patients' legs, our vascular specialists use the latest endovascular surgery methods such as balloon angioplasty and stenting. PAD treatment is performed on an outpatient basis in MVI's office-based lab. Vascular disorders often develop quietly, without noticeable symptoms until they reach an advanced stage causing stroke, limb amputation, or death. Conditions such as peripheral artery disease (PAD), carotid artery disease, and aneurysms can progress undetected, posing significant threats to your overall health and life. A vascular screening is a noninvasive series of evaluations that assess the health of your blood vessels and arteries. This screening can help detect early signs of issues such as stroke, heart attack, peripheral artery disease, and abdominal aortic aneurysm. Vascular screenings are quick, and painless, and utilize ultrasound imaging. They are performed right in our office here at Milford Vascular Institute. The vascular screening results can be lifesaving by allowing early intervention and treatment, helping to save limbs and lives. Early detection and intervention are crucial in managing vascular disorders. Using the most advanced vascular ultrasound technology, at the Milford Vascular Institute our team of RVTs helps discover the vein and vascular disorders affecting our patients. A vascular ultrasound allows our vascular specialists to examine the blood circulation through the arteries and veins in the neck, arms, legs, and abdominal region. It helps identify aortic aneurysms, and blockages in the arteries of the neck and legs before they become fatal. Finding and treating vascular disorders in time can help prevent stroke and aneurysm rupture before they happen, helping to save lives in our community. Treatment options may include lifestyle changes, medications, and in some cases, surgical intervention to restore normal blood flow and prevent complications. Understanding the dangers of vascular disorders and the severe consequences of untreated conditions underscores the importance of early detection and treatment. If you suspect you might be at risk, consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation and appropriate management plan. By staying vigilant and proactive about your vascular health, you can significantly reduce the risk of severe health complications and improve your overall well-being. Regular check-ups and awareness of risk factors such as smoking, hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol can aid in early diagnosis. We generally recommend vascular screenings for anybody over the age of 50. If you are over 50, or suspect you might be at risk, request your free vascular screening at Milford Vascular Institute for a thorough evaluation and appropriate treatment plan by giving us a call at (203) 418-7386. Varicose veins are a common yet often distressing condition where veins become enlarged, twisted, and painful. This occurs when faulty valves cause blood to pool in the veins, leading them to bulge. While some see varicose veins merely as a cosmetic issue, they can result in significant health problems if not addressed. You should consult a vascular surgeon if you experience varicose veins symptoms such as: Persistent swelling in the legs Painful, swollen, or throbbing veins Skin changes around the affected area, such as discoloration or ulcers Heavy or achy legs, especially after long periods of standing or sitting A vascular surgeon will conduct a thorough examination, potentially using diagnostic imaging like ultrasound, to determine the severity of your condition. Based on the assessment, they may recommend one or more of the following treatments: Treatment Options Lifestyle Changes: Simple modifications such as regular exercise, weight management, and leg elevation can alleviate symptoms. Compression Stockings: These specially designed stockings improve blood flow and reduce swelling and discomfort. Sclerotherapy: A minimally invasive procedure where a solution is injected into the varicose vein, causing it to collapse and eventually disappear. Laser Treatments: Utilizes intense light to close off varicose veins. Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA): Uses radiofrequency energy to heat and close the affected vein. Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT): Similar to RFA but employs laser energy to seal the vein. Ambulatory Phlebectomy: In severe cases, the physical removal of the vein may be necessary. At Milford Vascular Institute, we specialize in minimally invasive varicose vein treatments, such as radiofrequency ablation, Varithena® microfoam, VenaSeal™ vein closure, endovenous laser ablation, and ambulatory phlebectomy. All procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, offering quick recovery with minimal downtime. If you're suffering from varicose veins, and experiencing debilitating symptoms like Greg did, don’t delay. When the carotid arteries become blocked by plaque build-up, blood circulation to the brain can become restricted, causing a potentially fatal stroke. Aging, smoking, high blood pressure. high cholesterol, diabetes, and heart disease can put a person at risk of developing neck artery blockage (Carotid Artery Disease). People who have developed blockage in their carotid arteries may experience ringing in the ears or fainting due to the decreased blood circulation to the brain. Early diagnosis and treatment of carotid artery blockage can save you from a sudden stroke that can cause disability or death. In the efforts to reduce the incidence of stroke in our community, here at Milford Vascular Institute, we offer free carotid artery ultrasounds all year round. Carotid artery ultrasounds can help discover if you have blockage in your carotid arteries, and to what extent you have blockage. The extent of blockage discovered will determine the method of treatment, which can range from simple lifestyle changes to interventional treatments to unblock the carotid arteries. At Milford Vascular Institute, our board certified vascular surgeon and board certified interventional radiologist use the most advanced, the safest, and the most effective, non-invasive carotid artery surgery methods available anywhere to restore healthy blood flow to the brain, minimizing the risk of stroke. Here is board certified interventional radiologist Dr. Paul Davis explaining the causes, symptoms, treatment, and the danger of carotid artery disease: "Hi, Dr. Paul Davis here, interventional radiologist at Milford Vascular Institute. I wanted to take a moment here to talk to you about carotid artery disease. The carotid arteries are the large vessels that supply your head and your brain with blood. And if one has hardening of the arteries or blockage or near blockage of one of those arteries, the big worry is that you could have a stroke. And that is a major concern, of course, for everybody. Nobody wants to have a stroke. And if you can prevent it, that's a wonderful thing. So if you've been diagnosed with carotid artery disease or are worried about carotid artery disease or have had some symptoms that might suggest carotid artery disease, what might that be? Something where you get a little dizzy or you have almost a nearly fainting episode, or your doctor has put a stethoscope on your neck and said you might have a little noise, what we call a bruit. We can diagnose that and potentially treat that here at Milford Vascular. If you have those issues or problems or concerns, please call us. We'll be happy to see you. We will examine you. We will perform an ultrasound here the same day and get a very good idea of what your carotid arteries look like. And if we're concerned or there's a worry that there could be a narrowing that is worrisome, we would send you for further imaging, either a CAT scan or an MRI. And as a radiologist, I would personally interpret those images and decide if it's narrowed, how narrowed it is, and what the best treatment is. And then you would come back to the office and we would discuss those results. Now, the good thing is a lot of us have a little bit of narrowing in our arteries and not to be worried about it. Most of the time, it's just lifestyle changes, maybe a change in medications, maybe an aspirin. But in some people where the narrowing is getting severe or worrisome, we might suggest a further intervention. Either a carotid stenting or a surgery where we take out the plaque and open up the artery so the brain is getting full blood flow and would decrease any chance of having a severe stroke, which could really obviously devastate someone's life and or their family's life. So if you have any concerns or problems or you're worried or just want to talk to somebody about that, please call our office. We'll be happy to see you." When arteries in the leg become narrowed or blocked, it restricts blood flow, which can cause pain, cramping, and even tissue damage. Without proper treatment, PAD can lead to critical limb ischemia, resulting in sores, infections, or even the need for amputation. Furthermore, PAD is a marker for systemic atherosclerosis, increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Recognizing the symptoms early, such as leg pain during exercise or non-healing wounds, is crucial. Treatments range from lifestyle changes and medications to surgical interventions. Addressing PAD promptly can prevent severe outcomes and improve quality of life. If you experience symptoms or have risk factors such as diabetes, smoking, or high blood pressure, consult with a vascular specialist immediately. Early diagnosis and intervention are key to managing this serious condition effectively. Milford Vascular Institute is at the forefront of minimally invasive vascular care, providing advanced endovascular procedures to to treat PAD such as; atherectomy (plaque removal), balloon angioplasty (artery widening), and stenting (keeping the artery open). These treatments aim to restore normal blood flow and prevent further complications such as leg amputations. • Wound Care - Milford Vascular Institute | Vascular Specialists
